ZORUTTI VINI, A TREASURE CHEST OF WINES IN THE PEARL OF COLLIO

The sweet Collio hills near Gorizia, just beside Friuli Venezia Giulia's frontier with Slovenia, are home to many renowned wineries. One of them, Zorutti Vini, has just joined FVG in Asia's family by becoming our business partner. Located in Dolegna del Collio, a tiny interesting town just north of Cormons and bordering the Slovenian territory on the east, the wine-making company was set up by founder Andrea Paolo Comis in 1966, even before the consortium to safeguard Collio's wines, Consorzio Tutela Vini del Collio, was established (that was in 1968). It's been a long way since then, as Collio now also has its very own wine DOC.

Comis family's estate stretches itself on a 28 hectares-wide land, where they grow and harvest the grapes. The vineyards surround the winery headquarters which are based into an historic 18th century building, with a story of its own: before being turned into the Comis' house, it had been a home to famed Friulian poet Pietro Zorutti, who was born there in 1792. That's why the Comis family decided to name their wine firm after him, to honour his memory and literary legacy: Zorutti used to write in Friulian dialect, thus giving his mother tongue a deserved place among noble languages. It also testifies for the family's commitment towards its homeland, deeply rooted in a love and respect for it and its nature.

Since the beginning, from generation to generation, Zorutti Vini has been making wines for over 50 years in compliance with traditional and antique skills, then gradually supporting them by using modern technologies too. «My father used to say: never take for granted the gifts God has given to you. This is why we add nothing to and take nothing away from our grapes», says Carlo Comis. And the Zorutti Vini wines' range is now pretty varied and includes many great native grapes, all of them being the perfect pairing for any kind of cuisine, from local dishes to international ones.
Among the white wines there are extraordinary native varieties such as Malvasia, Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and also international ones like Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. Though in the Collio area whites usually prevail, Zorutti Vini makes also wonderful red wines: like the native Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso or Cabernet, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. A special wines' section will delight wine lovers too, with the native and unique-tasting Schioppettino and the sparkling wines Coè.

It is so close to Slovenia that even its name comes from it. Sometimes referred to as “the pearl of Collio”, Dolegna in fact derives from the Slovenian word dolènji, meaning “set below”. Its western boundary is marked by the river Judrio and, being split into five districts, its symbols are five stars and one pen, this one remembering poet Pietro Zorutti (1792-1867), beloved Friulian intellectual.
Zorutti Vini's headquarters are themselves a touristic spot, with the beautiful church (see photo on the right) included in the estate now owned by the Comis family. A few votive churches are scattered all around Dolegna and the Triussio Castle (13th century) tower over the river, dominating the area which is mainly rural and wooded with mostly chestnut-trees, durmast oaks and cherry-trees.

In fact, Dolegna del Collio is a waypoint on Strada del Vino e delle Ciliege, that is The Wines' and Cherries' Itinerary. It's a route, conceived in 1963, which departs from the centre of Gorizia and takes tourists through Collio's towns (Cormons, Capriva del Friuli, San Floriano, Oslavia just to name a few) in order to let them appreciate local nature, wines and food: actually Dolegna is famous for its
trattorie too, restaurants where mainly typical dishes are served.
And being historically a wine growing area, Dolegna has also been appointed “Città del Vino” (wine city) as it belongs to the national and Friulian network "Città del Vino".
