OIV 2020 REPORT, ITALY'S THE FIRST WORLD WINE EXPORTER AND PRODUCER

25/4/2021

Picture
PictureOIV General Director Pau Roca during the online conference
2020 was a tough year for the wine market, though losses could have been far worse. Last week the OIV – International Organisation of Vine and Wine presented its 2020 report: “State of the Vitivinicultural World”. On a web conference from OIV's headquarters in Paris, its Director General Pau Roca showed data about wine production, consumption and international trade.
Last year, marked by the Covid-19 crisis and lockdowns all over the world, saw wine consumption volume drop by 3%, while wine production was slightly below average for the second consecutive year. The other main point is that latest data on China seem to highlight the end of its wine sector's rapid growth. The surface area of the world vineyards in 2020 is estimated at 7.3 millions of hectares (stable since 2017) and world wine production, excluding juices and musts, is estimated at 260 millions of hectolitres (+1% / 2019). The world wine export market has contracted slightly in volume reaching 105.8 mhl (-1.7% /2019), but has seen a relatively sizeable fall in value, with 29.6 billions Euros (-6.7% /2019).

Lockdown measures and associated policies such as sales bans, and the weight of tourism in national wine consumption played a role in the consumption's decrease. The full or partial closure of the Horeca channel – such as restaurants, bars – has caused a fall in sales in value, and to a lesser extent in volume, only partially compensated by the increase in wine sales via e-commerce and large retailers. That's probably why premium wines suffered the most, while large producers that owned the off-premise channel with large partner wholesalers performed well. With the exception of Prosecco, sparkling wine is the category of wines mostly affected, while bag-in-box wine sales have experienced a sharp increase in sales. Not only Covid-19, but also the imposition of new trade barriers (U.S.A. retaliatory tariffs, China tariffs on Australian wine, Brexit) had an impact on global trade.
The key to survival is adapting and diversify: «The sector is highly concentrated, and therefore risky. This shows us that diversification is necessary, starting with consumption», said Pau Roca. Among other objectives, the OIV is working to make wine a more universal consumer product. «Asia, as a growing consumer continent, is one of the main challenges for the wine world», considered Pau Roca.

Italy, world's first wine exporter and producer
Overall Italy's performance was excellent, considering the hard circumstances. According to OIV 2020 report, it established itself as the world's largest wine exporter by volume with 20.8 millions hectolitres (20% of the global market), beating Spain (second) and France (third), who registered a worse decrease. But France is still the first one by value, with Italy just around the corner: the reason is that French wines (especially premium ones) are usually more expensive than Italian ones. Which seems to be confirmed by another figure: Italy is at the top as to bottled wines' exports by volume, and nonetheless France beats it in terms of value.
Italy, Spain, and France together exported 54.6 mhl, accounting for 52% of the world market and are at the world export top in terms of value, too, with 6.2 billions Euros, 2.6 and 8.7 respectively. In Italy, Spain and France bag-in-box wines recorded positive growth rates in both volume (27%, 41%, 13% respectively) and in value (21%, 23%, 7% respectively) while sparkling wines saw a decrease, though in the case of Italy it was restrained, compared to the other two countries. Italy also recorded the highest level of consumption in the last decade: 7.5 % more than 2019.
Italy, France and Spain are once again on the top of the world for wine production: the three of them account for more than a half (53%) of the global wine production. And in this case too Italy comes first once again (France's second, Spain's third), having produced 49.1 millions hectolitres which make up for a 19% share of the whole global production (3% more than 2019).

About OIV
The OIV– International Organisation of Vine and Wine was created in 1924 as a response to the international viticulture crisis. It's a technical and scientific intergovernmental organisation which operates under a renewed agreement, signed in 2001 and brings together the world of vine and wine to collaborate within the sector. It started off with only six members but it now counts 48 member states across five continents: these countries are responsible for 85% of the global production and 80% of the consumption of wine in the world. The OIV aims to inform, assist, harmonise, standardise and support the vitivinicultural sector. To achieve these goals, it works through a network of over 1,000 experts from around the world. International collaboration provided through the OIV has grown increasingly important, as more than two out of five wine bottles consumed in the world are imported.

THE GREAT BEAUTY, ITALIAN WINES' VIRTUAL TOUR BY WINESCRITIC.COM

PictureRaffaele Vecchione, WinesCritic founder
It's a sold out for “La Grande Bellezza”. The wine blog WinesCritic.com launched “The Great Beauty, The Italian Wines Virtual Tour 2021” which will present 62 Italian wines to more than 270 selected trade experts in Hong-Kong, Amsterdam, Stockholm, London, New York and Florence. From April 26th to April 30th, 34 Italian winemakers from seven regions – including Friuli Venezia Giulia – will showcase their wines online on Zoom, while registered participants will be able to taste them live thanks to a special box containing all the wines, carried out with the help of Vinovae, the French company that reconditions wines in small 2cl bottles. A digital guide created for the three-hour meeting will also lead to discover the beauty and authenticity of each producer.
It'll be possible to listen to the meetings non-actively and for free, here's the list of events (click on them):
26th April, 11am Hong Kong
27th April, 10am Amsterdam-Stockholm
28th April, 11am London
29th April, 5pm New York
30th April, 10am Florence

The idea: virtuality overcoming barriers
It's been a tough year for the wine business, as Covid-19 related crisis not only affected sales figures, but also compelled all the biggest wine fairs around the world to cancel or postpone their events, thus compromising the chance for producers and enologists to connect directly with professional wine traders. Hence the need for a virtual event like La Grande Bellezza – The Great Beauty, that will bring local winemakers on a global ride through six countries and three continents.
Producers will be able to exhibit labels reviewed with at least 90+ while telling their story, the main characteristics of their production area and the vintages presented. Among the 34 Italian showcasing winemakers, 7 are from Friuli Venezia Giulia: Albafiorita, Borgo Savaian, Della Casa Vini, I Feudi di Romans, Ronco Blanchis, Valeria Cesari, Vin de la Neu. Their audience will be wine trade experts carefully chosen among importers, distributors, restaurateurs, sommeliers and collectors, thanks to a meticulous selection from the database of WinesCritic.com, Internationalwinereport.com and Wine Searcher.

It's already an international festival that has been involving artists from Eastern and Central Europe for 30 years, and it's now going global. Mittelfest, the event based in Cividale del Friuli and showcasing innovative music, dance, theatre and contemporary arts' performances, has teamed up with Ente Friuli nel Mondo (Friuli in the World's Institution) to reach out to an even wider audience.
Ente Friuli nel Mondo coordinates a network of more than 150 associations of Friulians scattered all over the world, the so called Fogolârs Furlans (“Friulians hearths”) that will help spread globally Mittelfest's cultural project through specific activities and online events, and also by mean of their “Friuli nel Mondo” magazine, a bimonthly which has been published by the institution since 1952. Friulians who are members of a Fogolâr (both in Italy or abroad) will also be granted special access to the festival's shows, which will take place from August 27th to September 5th in Cividale.
Mittelfest's President Roberto Corciulo and Ente Friuli nel Mondo's President Loris Basso just signed a three-year deal of collaboration: «Mittelfest's spirit has always been both local and international – Corciulo said – It was born and nurtured in a unique territory, all the while involving Central and Eastern European countries in its activities. This collaboration definitely marks its global aspirations, as the festival aims to become an acknowledged point of reference for Friuli Venezia Giulia's culture. Now it will travel even further thanks to the Fogolârs' network».
«Ente Friuli nel Mondo is and has been for 70 years a key connection for all Friulians who live in all continents – Loris Basso explained – and is devoted to keep, enforce and enrich the bond between migrants and their homeland. We're really satisfied for this partnership, and to be able to bring to the world Mittelfest's excellent work. This collaboration points to enhance the region's immense cultural heritage and its identity, both in Italy and abroad».

MittelYoung and Agrifood FVG, an expanding strategy
Mittelfest's President Roberto Corciulo recently signed another important three-year deal with Agrifood FVG's President Claudio Filipuzzi to promote Friuli Venezia Giulia's wine&food culture and traditions, and the so called "slow tourism". «Mittelfest is empowering the bond with its territory, also through the food&wine culture and local economies that play an important part in creating Friuli's unique story and traditions», said Corciulo. The collaboration with Agrifood FVG, Friuli's agribusiness cluster, began last year when the project “Io Sono FVG” (I am FVG) was officially launched during Mittelfest, a brand designed to identify FVG-made products.

Mittelfest also actively recruites young talents, and the call for its MittelYoung events – taking place from June 24th to 27th – was answered by more than 160 artists from Italy and 25 European countries: Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Germany, Albania, Switzerland, Greece, Malta, Kosovo and many others. «Simbolically speaking, it's a strong result, considering that all cultural places and events have been shut down for one year, crushing showbusiness professionals – said Giacomo Pedini, Mittelfest's Artistic Director – The festival aims to overcome all these hardships through MittelYoung by promoting dialogue, artistic interconnections and the youngs' talent». Now a commission made of 30 showbusiness professionals aged between 20 and 30 years old, coming from Friulian cultural associations, along with the festival's Artistic Direction will choose nine shows (three out of every discipline: theatre, music and dance) that will be performed in June, three of which will eventually make it to Mittelfest's official calendar at the end of summer.

About Fogolârs Furlans
The term “fogolâr”, or hearth, was chosen as a powerful symbol of Friulian tradition. Standing by the fireplace, in the kitchen, was the key moment for families to be reunited after a long day of hard work, and to be finally together and sharing food, wine, stories. The need for a network connecting Friulians all around the world particularly rised along with the strong wave of immigration that involved many people in Italy immediately after World War II, fleeing from poverty towards wealthier places (a first, considerable wave already started after World War I). The Ente Friuli nel Mondo was officially established in 1953, reuniting associations all around the world known as Fogolârs Furlans and promoting through them not only cultural but also economic activities. Now it accounts for 150 active associations with more than 20,000 members in multiple countries and continents: Argentina, Mexico, Perù, Uruguay, Venezuela, Brazil, China Japan, Iraq, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Australia, Canada, U.S.A., Congo, Madagascar, South Africa, Mozambique and all over Europe.

FIESTE DE PATRIE DAL FRIÛL, TODAY WE CELEBRATE FRIULI'S DAY!

Picture
Today it's the 3rd of April and in Friuli Venezia Giulia they celebrate the “Fieste de Patrie dal Friûl”, the Friulian Homeland's Day. It's the commemoration of the birth of the Friulian Patriarchate State, officially established on the 3rd April in 1077 by the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV (1050-1106), King of Germany, who rewarded in this way Aquileia's Patriarch Sigeardo (or Sieghard) for his loyalty to the emperor.
The newborn state reunited many territories under the same flag, up to the 15th century. The Friulian flag is the centre of the celebrations: the golden heraldic eagle on a light blue background is the symbol of the city of Aquileia, which was founded by the Romans in 181 b.C. for its strategic position on the sea, and as an outpost barrier against the Barbarians descending from the North. Aquileia, nowadays a unique UNESCO site, had been for a long time the seat of the homonymous Catholic Patriarchate, and then became the capital city of the Friulian State.
The flag is the seventh oldest one ever recognized in Europe (it dates back to 1334) and the most ancient Friulian banner, originally from the 15th century, is still preserved and exposed at the Duomo Cathedral in Udine: it once wrapped up Patriarch Bertrand of Saint Geniès' body.

ARLeF and the 2021 celebrations
As we said, the flag is at the very heart of the whole Fieste de Patrie dal Friûl. The Agjenzie Regjonâl pe Lenghe Furlane – Regional Agency for the Friulian Languages (ARLeF) last year launched an online initiative to celebrate the day, as it was right in the first pandemic wave so all events had to be cancelled. So, in March 2020 more than 500 people from all over the world sent their photos with the Friulian flag, to feel part of such a great community scattered on almost every corner of the earth.
As for this year, events were due to take place on April 11st in Udine but, again for new Covid-19 restrictions, they had to be postponed to September, when the city will host Friuli Doc. So ARLeF decided to donate flags to all the municipalities that needed one, and gave away hundreds of Friulian banners that will proudly wave today in every city of the region.
They also set up a surprise with the help of Friulian videomaking agency Quasar Corporate. Director Giorgio Milocco created for ARLeF a video in which the eagle-themed flag is the leading star, uniting Friulians living both in their homeland and around the world under it. Scenes were shot in New York, Los Angeles and Paris – and in Friuli, of course. You can watch it down here. Enjoy!
