As a preview of the festival, which is due on July 21-30, the third edition of Mittelyoung will bring young artists (under 30) on the stage in Nova Gorica and Cividale, from May 18 to May 21. Nine performances were chosen by the festival's curators among 169 applications, sent from 86 countries, to the call launched in the previous months and closed last February. Out of these nine performances, focused on dance, theatre, music and circus, and representing six different countries (Italy, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Croatia and Czech Republic), a jury will pick three winners who will go on stage during the main festival in July, in Cividale.
Thanks to the collaboration with the austrian Carinthischer Sommer Music Festival, a performance in the music category may also be selected to be staged there this summer, as part of the exchange between Mittelyoung and “CS under 30”. The collaboration with the Slovenian National Theatre SNG Nova Gorica will result in the Slovenian location hosting the opening shows of Mittelyoung 2023.
«What is the margin still given to the decisive choice, to the one capable of changing the course of a mechanism that seems immutable? – said Mittelfest director, Giacomo Pedini (pictured here on the right) – When looking at what will happen, is it possible to escape the temptation to think that the facts have already been decided, that there can be no alternatives? Does fate govern events or is it a game of interlocking external necessity and individual will? Every performance of Mittelfest 2023, in very different ways, wanders around these questions ».
May 18 – Two circus performances will open the under-30 festival at SNG Nova Gorica: “Quieto Parado“ by Pietro Barilli, Italy and “CM_30“ by Kolia Huneck, Germany (with audio support by Rutger Zuydervelt).
May 19 – The festival will go back to Cividale, where Trio-Bio from Austria will play the musical performance “I sogni sono gli specchi notturni dell’anima” (Dreams are the soul's night mirrors) at Santa Maria dei Battuti's church. On the same day, Lavish Trio from The Netherlands will perform their musical act “What if…?” with a piano, a violin and a cello.
May 20 – The day will open with a special event, a drama workshop by Bosnian playwright Tanja Sljivar. The workshop is a result of the project “A est del palcoscenico”, funded by the Italian Ministry for Culture through the “BOARDING PASS PLUS” call in partnership with AMA – Accademia Mediterranea dell’Attore (Lecce), Malte (Ancona), Alibi (Tricase), UUU (Belgrade-Serbia), Qendra Multimedia (Priština – Kosovo), Macedonian Center ITI (Skopje – North Macedonia), AKT (Elbasan – Albania), ATAC (Podgorica – Montenegro) and Mittelfest itself.
Then, back to Mittelyoung 2023 competition with five dancers from Collectief MAMM (The Netherlands) with their show “Something else”, followed by the theatrical performance “Piango in lingua originale” (I cry in original version) by Italian-Croatian actress Carla Vukmirović.
May 21 – Italian dancers Esenco Dance Movement will stage “Lay Bare”, with which they won the “Area Mediterranea” project. The theatre company FRAS from Czech Republic will bring to the stage their show “The HoneyMaker”. The closing performance will be “Hrduja” by Italian musician Massimo Silverio.
