The official ceremony took place on Thursday, June 1 at the local Enoteca Comunale (town's wineshop) and was attended by the local administration, including Sgonico-Zgonik's mayor Monica Hrovatin, by Tiziano Venturini, Città del Vino Friuli Venezia Giulia's delegate, and by other Città del Vino FVG members. The event also marked the kick-off of the 58th “Festa del Vino – Razstava Vin”, a four-days wine festival (up to June 4) with over 25 winemakers from Sgonico-Zgonik and the surrounding area showcasing their wines.
58th Festa del Vino – Razstava Vin in Sgonico-Zgonik
The ceremony of Sgonico-Zgonik's official designation as a new member of Città del Vino opened the 58th wine festival “Festa del Vino – Razstava Vin”. Plus, at Enoteca Sgonico author Stefano Cosma introduced his new book “Vitovska, frutto del Carso” about the local, native vine variety Vitovska. On Friday, the festival will go on with an aperitivo at 6pm and live music by night. On Saturday, there'll be some entertainment for children with horse ridings and workshops in the afternoon, also repeating on Sunday. Later in the evening, group dances and live music by night. On Sunday, from 1pm to 4pm visitors will enjoy a “walking wine tasting”: “Gemina&Taste”, (passeggiata con degustazione). At 4pm, a mini-course of wine tastings for wannabe sommeliers will be held, and at 6.30pm the festival's best winemakers and oilmakers will be awarded – and live music will wrap up the day again.
Throughout the wine festival a street food area will provide dinner for visitors (starting from 6pm on Friday and Saturday, from 5pm on Sunday) and wine tastings will be up all day for wine lovers. Many local farmers, producers and winemakers will welcome tourists at their booths. There'll be also an art exhibition by Massimo Ferluga, and an exhibition about the local Kras-Carso Geopark. Free visits to the botanic garden Carsiana will be allowed during the wine festival, and discounted tickets will be available to visit the Grotta Gigante, an impressive gigantic cave at Borgo Grotta Gigante.
Meanwhile, just a few days ago, in Friuli Venezia Giulia the UNIPLI - Unione Nazionale Pro Loco d’Italia, the national association for the promotion of local tourism, signed a deal of mutual collaboration with Città del Vino. The agreement was sealed during the event “Sapori Pro Loco” at Villa Manin in Codroipo (near Udine) by UNIPLI president Antonino La Spina and Angelo Radica, Città del Vino president.
The two associations will team up to promote local products and producers (winemakers, farmers, etc) in multiple ways, and through a new shared brand: “Sagra di Qualità”, aiming at placing quality products during the typical “sagras”, the country festivals that many Pro Locos – the local associations of volunteers promoting tourism in their area – organize all over Italy, especially during the summer. «Pro Locos have been promoting their territories for over 140 years – said Antonino La Spina – a mission shared by Città del Vino too. This deal lies on solid, common foundations». «We aim at a collaboration to enhance winemaking territories through new projects, or already existing events», said Angelo Radica. Wine tourism in Città del Vino's member towns is constantly on the rise, with a 3 billion euros income last year and 15 million wine tourists.
And this week, in San Floriano del Collio, near Gorizia – a Città del Vino town – debuted the project “Ven demà”(“vendemmia”, grape harvesting in Friulian): the educational and touristic grape harvest, a different kind of holiday that will be enjoyed by wine tourists, starting from next summer. From August to October, in Friuli Venezia Giulia visitors will be able to take part to the grape harvest in vineyards for few hours a day, an experience including accomodation in the area and, of course, wine tastings. The project will get together winemakers, local bed&breakfasts, restaurants, farms, local producers, at the same time promoting local wines and food delicacies, as well as slow tourism (such as hiking, biking, horse riding): all activities perfectly suitable for families.
